I am the garden where the Dutch tulip began. In 1593 Carolus Clusius came to Leiden to run the Hortus, and he brought tulip bulbs that had come from Istanbul. People wanted them so badly that they climbed the wall at night and stole them. That, the story goes, is how the tulip spread across the country. Now the garden is yours for a week. By day you put two of the same together and they grow, all the way up to the Semper Augustus. A flowering tulip can go out into the city and reach real places in Leiden, each with its story. At night the thieves come over the wall, more of them every night and faster. Hold the lantern on them until they run. Whatever you keep safe until morning grows one size.
